Wish: Mary’s House Ephesus

The weekly theme is ‘wish’.

The wall next to the house where Mary supposedly lived in Ephesus in Turkey, is full of small notes with wishes and messages.

About the B4 retouch series:
I browsed my archive for pictures to publish in – an originally – small series. That series caught on a bit more than I thought. All of them are not retouched yet. Scratches, dust and stains are not removed.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Wall (Hacilar)

The weekly challenge is about ‘walls’. Walls erected, seen or unseen, walls built by ourselves or others, signs on walls.

The walls that are there on this photo cannot been seen. This is Turkey near Burdur. Hacilar is an old town; it is covered by earth and rocks under this farmland. It is one of the oldest settlements in present Turkey, and has been excavated in 1960 but closed up again. The walls here are the walls humans have build around this old history. Walls of power you can not see. The history of Hacilar is mostly still untold. A matriarch society long ago can apparently be a danger to present society and beliefs.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Express Yourself (Language)

This weekly theme is ‘express yourself’. Language is an important mean to communicate, understand and make sense of things. Here some old greek carvings from a site somewhere in Turkey.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Express Yourself (Boys)

The theme for the Weekly Photo Challenge is ‘express yourself’.

When visiting Turkey in 1999 I met this group of young boys at  lake Egirdir. They were ‘posing’ in their own way for photos.

B4 Retouch: a last Visit to Turkey in 2014

Turkey is a beautiful country. A set of photos that are in my workflow and ‘want’ to be published before the end of this year! Some from Istanbul, some from lake Egirdir.

Weekly Photo Challenge/B4 Retouch: Twinkle (Blue Mosque Istanbul)

Xmas is coming near and maybe because of that the theme for the Weekly Photo Challenge is ‘twinkle’. There is a lot in the world that twinkles; let’s make some more twinkles by showing twinkles! Here are some sparkles in the blue mosque in Istanbul coming from the lamps.

Weekly Photo Challenge/B4 Retouch: Gone but not forgotten (cemetery Istanbul)

This weekly theme is ‘gone but not forgotten’. Reading this sentence I always think of a song by Neil Young My my hey hey (Out of the Blue)  in which a verse reads: ‘The king is gone but he’s not forgotten. This is the story of a Johnny Rotten. It’s better to burn out than it is to rust. The king is gone but he’s not forgotten. It is just in my head. It remembers me of times long gone, but I do still have the vivid memory of ‘Rust never sleeps’ on a turntable. Luckily everyone is free to give sense to his own life in his own chosen fashion.

Luckily for a theme like this, there are lots of things that are gone but not forgotten. But some things we just forget. They get lost, are destroyed or are simply disappeared from our  conscience collective memory. Some come back each year at  the same time: the Seasons and all the months and days on the calendar. Those we easily remember. But life stops; the only certainty a human has is that he will die. This is a photo of people who are no longer. As humans part of who we are (physically) will rest in a grave or urn. This is a cemetery in Istanbul. I just loved the ‘hats’ on the stones. People gone but not forgotten. We just fade away.

Weekly Photo Challenge/B4 Retouch: Endurance (Side)

This weekly photo challenge is about ‘endurance’.  Endurance is about ‘the long run’, being there still after quite a bit of time. An example of this category are old monuments of the classic period of Greeks and Romans. Here is the amphitheater of Side in the south of Turkey.
